Part of it is related to what the first poster said, and part of it is related to the home run record that Roger Maris held from
1961-1998.
As you may know Roger Maris hit 61 homers in 1961, which broke Babe Ruth's record of 60 homers in 1927. In 1961 the season was 162 games long and in 1927 it was 154.
At one point during the 1961 season, Ford Frick, the baseball commissioner at the time, suggested that if the record was broken, then it should be somehow designated, perhaps with an asterisk, that it was set in a season that was 8 games longer. It was a little like saying Maris broke the record, but he didn't really break it. Whether or not the asterisk should be there or not was a source of debate among baseball fans until Mark McGwire broke the record again in 1998.
When people talk about the asterisk as related to Bonds, they're saying that technically he broke the record, but he didn't really break it because of his alleged use of performance enhancing subtances.
The funny thing is, I don't think there ever actually was an asterisk next to Maris' record. It was just something that was suggested at the time, but I think the record books actually showed two different home run records, one for a 154 game season and a second for a 162 game season.

The asterisk symbolizes the STEROID ERA and there as of now noway to prove that baseball players who have set records such as McGuire Sosa Bonds also other players such as Palmero, the kid from St. Louis who was a pitcher turned outfielder (hit some monster home runs) but anyway the asterisk means that they are suspected of cheating but MLB cant prove it...Bonds and McGuire IMO did juice if you look at pics from earlier on in their careers and pics of what they look like when they set home run records it is a no brainier...I think that its a bad idea to even allow players and baseball memorabilia that has been generated during the steroid era even be allowed into Cooperstown that is a slap in the face to those players who have made into the hall by being the best in the sport with out doing steroids

No, in this context it does not mean "huge call." the guy speaking says that Gordie is "off the chart," it is, that Gordie is severe in some way (outstanding, very undesirable, very loopy, i don't understand, by way of fact i don't understand the better context of this citation). sometimes in lists of extremes (like "quickest time to run the one hundred meter sprint," and so on.) a overall performance it is unusual in some way is marked with an asterisk (the * character) the two to show that that is unusual or to refer the reader to a footnote explaining why it is so severe. So the sentence potential something like "Gordie, you're somewhat somewhat ______" (good, undesirable, loopy, in spite of they have been speaking approximately until now this line is asserted).

The asterisk symbolizes the hate and animosity the fans feel for Bonds, Sosa, McGuire, Giambi, and all steroid users of the Steroid Era. Bud Selig gets to share in the shame as well.

It means that the record is tainted. The asterick is a side note saying that while he broke the record, he did it with the steroids.
