Dr. Karps - Happiest Baby on the Block, swear by it. He also has a toddler one.
Also the Babys Owners Manual is a handy easy to read one.
Ive heard a lot also like Belly Laughs.
Also - How to Raise a Smarter Child by Kindergarten (or something close to that) by a Dr. Perlmutter, has some great ideas for activities and learning, starting at newborns.

besides the 'what to expect' series, I used and used the American Academy of Pediatrics: Caring For Your Baby And Young Child, Birth to Age Five. It's a comprehensive book with all things from developmental highlights, to basic child and post natal mother care, common childhood ailments, was to 'deal' with emotional issues, how to help your child accept a new sibling, picking a great daycare provider and much much more. We call it the Baby Bible at our house!!! You can find it at any bookstore and I believe I have even seen it at chain dept. stores as well. It's about 2 inches thick and I have seen it softcover and hard cover and the most recent one I gave as a gift to another expectant mom was spiral bound.

Get the book "What To Expect When You're Expecting" and "What To Expect The First Year". I used the "Expecting" book every day during my pregnancy. It is by far the most helpful book I found. Now that my baby has been born I use the "First Year" book every month to get information on her development. Very Helpful and totally worth the $12 per book at Walmart.

Jenny McCarthy has a couple...they are the BEST and funniest books ever! And everything she says is SOOOO true!
If you're pregnant: Belly Laughs
If you just had a baby: Baby Laughs
She also has another book: Life Laughs (but it doesn't really have anything to do with babies.)

no book will prepare you for your little one, after all the book isn't based on your child! every child is different there for the book can only tell you so much. the best advice for you would be to save your money and take each day and step as it comes, after all your the mum besides its fun learning things for real rather than whats written in a book. good luck

"What to Expect When You're Expecting" and the other books in the series, like "What to Expect the First Years". I have the first one that i listed and its amazing, it answers so many questions, and is a great reference guide. It has everything from finding out that you are pregnant to after you've had the baby.

Baby 411 (for all the details on "How-to" care for your baby.)
The Nursing Mother's Companion Guide (for the lowdown on nursing.)
I hated the What to Expect series--they just scare you.

Your Pregnancy Week by Week and Your Baby's First Year Week by Week. Skip What to Expect.. too preachy for me. Also the Baby Whisperer is good, tells you how to settle your baby and about the different types of babies-fussy, angel, sensitive.
