Overheating.. new fan possibly.
Another thing to check for is a faulty power supply. Sometimes those can cause same kind of problems.

Probably a fan has failed on ya. Costs around $10 to get them replaced.
Try to boot into safe mode. Restart the computer and press the F8 key until you get multiple boot options. Choose the Safe Mode option and after you start up click yes on the warning box that will pop up. If your computer runs fine without shutting down then you have a virus problem. Update your virus protection and run the scan from the Safe Mode.
If it still is shutting down while in safe mode then it more than likely is a hardware problem. Case fans are usually the problem, but it can be the processor fan also if you have an active heat sink.
Whatever you do ..... don't reformat the computer.

2 possible problem
components overheating or PSU (power supply unit) failing, or in some cases, damage hardware. My first guess would be components overheating (because from your description, the PC malfunction, but didn't completely shut down, fans still running)
Open up your casing, you should see some fans inside. so swtich on your PC and ensure that all the fans are moving. Below those fans are metal with fins, called heatsink, ensure the heatsink are not full of dust. If all your component fans and heatsink are working and clean, then your PC temperature should be fine.
If so, a failing PSU may be a cause too. Though most failing PSU will usually shut down and when it does, your PC components should all stop to a silence stand still. But who knows, a failing PSU causes many kind of problems before it completely stop working such as unstable voltage, that will cause your hardware to crash.
Another rare possibility is probably some capacitor inside there is damaged, leaking usually. This is a possible case for hardware damage since more serious damage would meant your PC wouldn't function at all. Just take a quick look inside your PC and ensure all capacitors on the motherboard and graphic card are clean, with not leaking liquid or rust on it.

Its a heat related problem If your computer is encased in a computer desk TAKE IT OUT ! Take off the side panels (if its dusty inside clean it out with compressed air Its most likely video as you get a black screen (no data) and you still have hard ware functioning(if its just fans working it could be the cpu , motherboard or power supply unit) . Swap out your video card with a known good pci card ; an old ati 7200 works very well for this. If you have onboard graphics disable it first in your bios. Place a fan facing the top of the mother board and then on the other side of your computer facing the bottom of your mother board, if it stays on longer or becomes stable its the mother board capacitators over heating and the cpu; as one will cause the other to over heat and evetually fail.(Replace both )Swap out psu with a known good one with more wattage.

That sounds like a heat issue. A processor will shut down a computer in order to keep from damaging itself. Your CPU cooling fan may be damaged or it could have a bad connection.
Depending on your computer, you can download Speed Fan to test your processor heat and fan speed. If the fan isn't working, you'll see zeros across the speed board and a high temp (above 160) on your CPU.
Here's the link.

If that is the culprit, just go to a computer store and get a replacement fan. The person helping you there will be able to get you what you need. You don't have to spend a lot of money to get a good fan.

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.healthboostpc.com
It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

your computer needs a reformat. its memory must have all been taken up. having reformat is better than deleting files because it's not just faster, it's like resetting or refreshing your old computer into a new computer.
