I can understand co-opting Western fashions to make oneself seem more part of the modern world and all, but doesn't anybody have the nerve to tell this guy that he's dressing completely inappropriately for a man of his station? Or is there some cultural taboo that I'm not aware of, that keeps Mahmoud Ahmadinejad from wearing a necktie?

Why would this belong in the "gay" section?!? Straight men worry about dressing appropriately for their job, too...I put it in "Culture" because I thought there might be some practice or custom in Iran that discourages men from wearing ties, or something...

As to where it came from...if memory serves, King Louis XIV adopted the custom after seeing a troop of Croatian soldiers who wore brightly-colored handkerchiefs tied around their necks...

As to Arafat's headwrap? I usually find myself thinking, "Somewhere in Israel, a restaurant is missing a tablecloth..."

Put on a tie to go to Columbia and the UN? Why bother?

He looks like he is doing the walk of shame after a one night stand; like he grabbed his stuff and took off without bothering to brush his hair, groom his beard or put his tie back on or even button his shirt all the way.

Maybe he has been watching old Miami Vice reruns and thinks that is still the style.

As I've said on here before, he looks like a cross between one of the PG Tips chimps, and 'Man at C&A'

oh and to the weird guy answering below me
wearing a tie isn't as 'gay' as calling it a 'necktie'

Only if its tight enough to cut off his oxygen supply. Alot of western men dress casual like that as in advertisements to look sexy and not so stuff up. Maybe he wants to look like those western men in magazines. What do you say?
Suits and ties are REALLY nice too!

To put or not to put,
It depends, to whom he wants to impress. By not wearing a tie he is an approachable man, that will listen to the common man. He is trying to be modern and acceptable.
Does he achieve it?

Hehehe. I know. The thing that really frosts my cookies is the beard. Neaten it up a little. The hair growing down the neck is nasty.

How refreshing to see a dress-code observation. (What did you think of Arafat's head wrap?)
