Why can't they be bright white like my florescent flights at home?

Many insects see ultraviolet light better than visible light, and are more attracted to it, because the flower patterns that attract insects are revealed in ultraviolet light.

You may find this strange, but female mosquitoes (the ones that bite) aren't attracted to this light. Mosquitoes in general are attracted to mammals and not the moon or lights. Other valuable insects, like moths and butterflies, which pose no harm to humans get attracted to the light and suffer untimely and unnecessary deaths.

A bug zapper is a bad idea, because it may actually attract more insects to one’s yard, rather than repelling them.

Because the blue light is very attractive to them... something to do with the lights wavelength and the critters vision...
