I work in a small city suburb of NYC - about 30 minutes north.
As I drove down the short alley between Main Street and the factory this morning, I saw someone sleeping (with a smile on his face) in the doorway of one of the buildings that make the alley.
I called the non-emergency police number and they sent a car over to move him along.
Would you have done the same? Or would you have left him there to sleep?

Let me clarify a few things. One - I don't work in NYC - I work is a residential/commerical mixed used area of suburb. There are tons of people who use this alleyway and it's not completely visible from the main street. And, no, I don't think it's OK to have random people sleeping in doorways. I think it puts the entire community at risk - albeit maybe not from this particular person.
I *don't* know if this person is harmless - how would you know?

I would have woke him, gave him something to eat and made sure he was okay. The problem in this nation is we hate. We cliam all this love and compassion, but we hate homeless people. We are afraid of them.
Thats why things like the disaster in New Orleans is sometimes a good thing, so folks can see how it is to be homeless, and maybe help next time they see a person on the street. "move them along" To where?
another street to be hungry and cold and out of sight of those with no feelings or heart.

I can not say I would have done the same..did it bother you in some way to see a homeless person asleep in an alley doorway? Where else would you suggest he go? I am sorry, but I do not understand your concern.

As long as he didn't have a gun out or something... I would have let him sleep. I mean why wake up someone who's sleeping restfully? Let the man have some peace and quiet as long as he's not messing with anyone. Let the man sleep.

As long as the weather is not bad, I would have let them sleep. They probably would have moved on when they got up.

You should have left him alone the poor bloke, it's not like he was hassling you was it? Next time, leave a dollar for him so at least he can buy himself a coffee.....

If he wasn't bothering me, I would have done nothing. Sleeping in someones doorway certainly would not have bothered me.

I would have left him there - he obviously needed a place to sleep - put yourself in his situation - how would you feel is the question you should be asking?

Yeah, I probably would have. He was peaceful and happy, an that is kind of hard for homeless people to achieve. I understand your helpfulness, but maybe it was better for him to be happy.
