Do you have anything magnetic sitting near your computer because that will do it. Also, your speakers ahve magnets in them, so be sure not to put them too close to your screen.

When you first turn on a colour monitor you can usually hear a sound almost like a dull bell. This is the "de-gaussing coil" removing any residual magnetism. If this stops working then residual magetism builds up and causes the colour distortions you describe. If you can find a hand held de-gausser this will help, but I suspect you are stuck with it.

Try your local TV repairer and describe your monitor fault. He/she may be able to fix it cheaply.
