I know the current 18 children who play, Friedrich, Louisa, Kurt, Brigitta, Marta and Gretl in the west end but how do they decide the groups that they worki in? What groups do they work in? and how do they rotate the performances?

I couldn't say for this theatre, but when my daughter perfomed this show there were 2 full sets of Von Trapp kids (except Liesl) and the others were understudies. The performance schedule was set up evenly ahead of time and understudies filled in where perofrmance conflicts came into play that were previously known and of course for last minute illnesses.

As for who was in which 'family' the director decided which groups made the best family units and each director has their own ideas about this. There are harmonies to be sung so sometimes it's more about that. It's also about height because many many fans of the show think that the children MUST line up by height. Some think it's about looks and will have a blond and red head cast and a brunette cast, sometimes it's more about who's schedules meshed with who's (some may have had similar conflict dates therefore they would be able to work togther the most)... there are many reasons why family groups will be cast together, but in the end only the director knows why he or she did things the way they did and they might never tell you why.

As for how they rotate the performances, our director tried to make sure one cast opened the run and one cast closed the run, he also tried to make sure that each week one cast had Friday and one had Saturday evenings and the other days were alternated as well particularly school day matinees. You see what I'm getting at? They always try to make it fair to everyone.

It may be that there is a main cast that they wish to feature in which case they may have a completely different type of schedule so if you know the children, why not ask their parents directly?

I would suggest you email the theater / producer for a SPECIFIC answer...

BUT, as a stage-manager for 30+ Community / Stock company productions... the director, choreographer and musical director will have their respective input as to which kids work best together. For a long run, those groups are then set, and an equal rotation is set.

A professional-theater will also have a lawyer to note what restrictions and labor laws dictate regarding the working hours.

Hope that helps alittle
