Definitely it's "Fallen" with Denzel Washington. And no, it's not an alien life form. Rather it's an evil entity (Azazel) which some of us know that exists.

In the last part where the good guy was getting 'infected' ('possessed' would have been the better term), he smoked a cyanide-laced cigarette..... but 'Azazel' transfered itself to a stray cat.

In the movie did they find a giant Spaceship under the ice if so then it is The Thing with Kurt Russell and it was the dogs that got infected and aliens ran about like big spiders. The only way they could tell if you were infected was to do a test on their blood by seeing if there was a reaction to fire.Hope it helps.

It really sounds like John Carpenter's The Thing. It starred Kurt Russell and Wilford Brimley.

A bunch of scientists were in the Antarctic and it starts by a dog mutating and attacking other dogs. I remember one scene they were trying to figure out who's body the alien was in, so they took blood samples in small containers and heated a wire and stuck it in the blood. The alien hated heat and when the hot wire came in contact with the blood, the alien tried to get away.

At the end I think two of the characters were sitting out in the snow, Kurt Russell being one of them.

Dreamcatcher didn't have any scenes like you describe.
