.020" should work ok. I forget if it's Briggs or Tecumseh that has the aluminum cover over the points which is also designed with a little tab for setting the points.

I know it a lot of trouble to get to the points but with that said you may only need to clean points with some emery cloth or the strike pad on the book matches. If it were me I would go ahead and replace the points and condenser due to the trouble and small cost. Rotate crank with the pulley until the points are open and adjust to .018 then place a dollar bill between them and rotate the crank to make sure they close. No feeler Gage then just use the match cover as is almost correct thickness as Gage. Hope this helps
