I ordered some seeds off e-bay. The plants that came up look like hemp. The plants are suppose to be ruby red hisbiscus. Can a novice tell a difference?

There are about 200 or so species of Hibiscus; I can think of at least two that look somewhat like hemp, H. cannabinus and H. radiatus. H. radiatus has pink/red flowers, while H. cannabinus tends to yellowish flowers with red centers.

Got some of the seed left? At this stage, that's probably the easiest check for a non-botanist. Compare

(Cannabis sativa seed)

It depends on what type of plants, a general plant id book can have lots of great pictures but not a lot of info on the plants needs. Your best bet is to stop in a book shop and browse through a few of the books on plant id. A lot of times you'll find great books on the bargain tables. Plus finding a book that you'll understand is key, some plant books give way to much detail when all you really want to know is how much light and water. My favorite book is Sunset Western Garden Book(around $25), it has a lot of helpful info for the first time gardener, you can find it on Amazon or in some Home Depots. If not that one, The Complete Garden Flower Book by Murdock Books(around $35) is great. Plus it makes a nice coffee table book. Anyway, good luck in the garden!!

First of all that excuse wouldn't fly in court!
Would a novice know this? Probably not!
If your hibiscus looks like this
and has (5 point leaves) or the link below which has the most common leaf. Then it's a flower. It's all in the leaves/foilage

When you hear the word hemp what is your first thought? If it is marijuana then you are mistaken. Hemp, the plant that is grown for agricultural and industrial use, is not the same plant as marijuana. Marijuana is a close cousin to hemp; they are both in the Cannabis family,

*Laugh* you have hibiscus. I got some seeds from my grandmother several years ago and carefully planted them in containers and took good care of them until they were sturdy enough to plant in my flower bed. I came home one day to find a police officer with a pair of binoculars blocking my driveway. I sat behind him until he noticed me and sped off down the street. He was inspecting my "plants".

I got a LOT of comments about my hibiscus from my old friends and had a lot of laughs about them, too. They make the most beautiful red flowers, but the leaves are strangely similar to what is an illegal cash crop in our region.
