Hello Ros,
Like most answers here I believe Jane Marple is just about the best character Christie ever created.
A few weeks ago one of the cable programs showed a Miss Marple weekend. I am afraid I was very angry because they did not show any films showing the original and in my opinion the best Jane Marple there has ever been, Margaret Rutherford.
True these films were made in black and white but I feel she captured the very essence of what Agatha Christie envisaged Jane Marple as being.
Joan Hickson portrayed Marple extremely well, but although Geraldine McEwan is a wonderful actress, I do believe she was miscast as Jan Marple.
With regard to the actoros who portrayed Poirot, David Suchet for me is the best Poirot there has been. Even better than Albert Finney and the wonderful Peter Ustinov.
But I still consider the Marple novels to be better than those featuring Poirot.

I don't think I could pick between the two. Miss Marple has her own way of looking at all people by relating them to St Mary Mead. And Poirot....his "little grey cells" are brilliant! So sorry all the Christie books I have read and I love them both!

I like Papa Poirot's deductive reasoning and approach to crime more than Ms Marple. After reading his last case, "Curtains", I find him totally endearing, humane. I was really shocked the way the case turned out and saddened of its ending.
I'm more used to Poirot's cases as more adventurous that I find Ms Marple's cases kinda boring in terms of action. But I must admit, her cases are more sinister than Poirot's as they deal with human nature and the evil that lurks within.

Hercule Poirot. I love his funny little mannerisms and quirks, like his sweet tooth and his obsession for symmetry and neatness.
