always felt akin to 'stir of echos'
its centered on normal people as apposed to rich people like in most american movies and i connected with it and the characters better,
ergo i was scared better and i think they did it all very well and it actually felt very Brittish
'what lies beneath' was a fave
scares wise, i think its got it down
but i got so annoyed at the richness of them that i barely look at it now, how am i a normal everyday joe shmo gonna connect with a rich violinist and her dupont chair winning husband eh?????

they are more ghost as apposed to 'terror' but there you go

oh yeah, i saw jeepers creepers there on an answer
terror yeah that had it for me
even my boyf, who is rarely scared, was scared by that one
and we both, pathetically considered getting up out the cinema we felt so scared
sad eh!!

'silent hill's good, could have been better made as usual, but i loved the fact they used most the stuff outa the game, thats how it was at all any good, thats what was scary about it
i think for me it would have been c**p if they hadnt done that

There are lots of good Japanese horror films from the last decade or so like
The Ring/Ring 2/Ring 0/Spiral
The Grudge (Ju-On) 1 and 2
Dark water
Audition
I see someone suggested Uzumaki, it's a bit creepy but not very scary but it is a great film, very, very funny!

Some German ones from the silent era are really creepy try:
Der Golem
The Cabinet Of Doctor Caligari (sp?)
Nosferatu

Some great American ones:
The Fog
Any George A. Romero films especially the "...Of The Dead" ones
Alien and Aliens
Eraserhead
If you like "slashers" there are loads of good American ones from the 80's but that's not my area so you'll have to see what everyone else suggests on that score!

As you asked for English ones here is a list of my favourite British ones:

Quatermass And The Pit (also look out for other earlier films from Hammer Studios like Dracula etc with Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing)

The Wicker Man

Deathline

The two Dr. Phibes films are, like Deathline, mostly funny but a good watch

28 Days later is OK but 28 weeks later is scarier!

I would say A CLOCKWORK ORANGE. I am not sure if this counts as a terror movie, but to this day I think it is pretty horrific , and sends chills up my spine. The thought behind it is brilliantly disturbing and people who say it is not bad at all are just trying to ignore the real fact of the film. It was disturbing, it is disturbing and it was always meant to be!

A GREAT PIECE OF MODERN CINEMA!

Jeepers Creepers 2. And the first Halloween movie I thought was very frightening and unbearably tense.
