Look, you'll get a bunch of "fanboy" responses to this question and the real answer that is it is up to you.
If you have owned PS2 and/or PSone then I would say PS3 is definately for you.
If you are a fan of Xbox titles then maybe you shoudlbuy the 360.
The bottom line is that they are both good in their own way. 360 hasbeen out for 2 full years nowso obviously it has "more" games. More is not always better as in my opinion the best 5 360 games have allcome out in the last 8 months (Halo 3, Gears of War, Dead Rising, Forza 2, and Lost Planet). It seems like360 games follow safe formulas and while enjoyable don't realy put the gaming world on its ear. The 360 is also prone to breaking and requires a lot of add ons that can really cost you quite a bit of money.
The PS3 is also a great system. While new to the market and still in its first year PS3 has several excellant games that will really impressyou. It seems like the games made just for PS3 (Resistance Fall of Man, Heavenly Sword, NinjaGaiden Sigma, Motorstorm, Warhawk, Lair) are graphically better than what you will see on a 360. Multiplatform games will look relitively the same on both system asthe developer has to work to 360s power as well as PS3s power when making a multiplatform so they really don'tget to use all the PS3 power that is available. PS3has also proven to be incredibly reliable and has a ton of great features (Wifi, Blu Ray player, internet browser, BlueTooth, HDMI, Digital Optical out, Memory Stick Duo, SD, USB, and CF Flash drive) all built in to the PS3. Similar features all have to be bought and added to a standard 360.
If I were you I would get a PS3 now, unless Halo 3 is a must. I personally am not big on shooters because once you beat them you've kind of been there done that and wheneverI go on Xbox Live there is always a bunch of idiot teenagers swearing and saying racial slurs while you play. PS3 is a more advance system, better built, and is ready for the next 4 years of gaming not the now. Blu Ray is going to matter as some 360 games are starting to come on 2 discs instead of one.
You won't be dissapointed with either but I feel PS3is the way to go. They have a lot more games I'm excited for now than 360.
Good Luck and take care.

They stopped making the XBX so good luck trying to find one. If you mean the 360, go for the PS3. The 360 is only going to be good for another year or two, and then the PS3 will start to take over. The PS3 is already starting to outsell the 360 on a month to month basis. The only reason the 360 has sold more units than the PS3 is because the 360 was released 1 year before the PS3. If both consoles were released at the same time, the PS3 would outsell the 360.
The 360 doesn't even have a HD-DVD player or Blu-ray player which is a disadvantage. Games are getting bigger and bigger, and developers are going to need more and more stoarage space. Lair and Heavenly Sword can't be done on DVD-9. It would take about 3 DVD-9 disks. Look at Gears of War. It's only about half a game. Wny? Maybe because the developer ran out of space, and didn't want to put the game on multiple disks. GTA IV is supposed to be one of the biggest game for next year, and Rockstar is already complaining that it's difficult to fit the entire game on the DVD-9. If Rockstar is complaining, I'm sure other developers will also complain. Most of the new 360 games are rather short. Again, it's the DVD that's to be blamed.

Almost a third of XBOX 360 are malfunctioning right from the start. PS3 return rate is only around 3%.
Let's compare them
PS3 has 8 kernels in Cell processor, Xbox 360 -only 3x2
PS3 uses advanced tech called Blu-Ray, one disc can store up to 50 gb (in the future - up to 200 gb), Xbox 360 - regular dual DVD (9.5 gb).
Calculations per sec - PS3 - 51-billion-dot-product-operati... per second
Xbox 360 - 33.6-billion-dot-product-opera... per second
PS3 has full media support - USBs, built-in card reader (except 20 gb version), ability to use printer and so on.
Xbox 360 has USBs and only 2 memory slots.
PS3 supports up to 7 Bluetooth Controllers
Xbox 360 - up to 4 Controllers
PS3 - wi-fi included (except 20 gb version)
Xbox 360 - wi-fi will cost you around 100 $
Xbox 360 is widely known for so-called "red ring of doom" problem - it gets overheated easily. My PS3 was running for more than 8 hours non-stop with no problems. Sometimes Xbox 360 becomes so overheated, that thermopaste on CPU melts, drips on motherboard and successfully shortcircuits it.
Besides all of this, I've seen disassembled Xbox 360 - regular PC architecture - Billy Gates is an uninventive nerd (as usual).
When I saw disassembled PS3 - it was a surprise - smart architecture, good cooling (don't buy external PS3 coolers - they make everything worse - original system is good), etc.
In 2008 we'll get more than 300 games, including Metal Gear Solid 4 and other great exclusives.
PS3 online world will be free, Xbox 360 - you have to pay.
In some countries people call Xbox 360 "Coffin 360".
The funniest thing, that right now there are no games for PS3, that show full potential of the console.
Sony expects PS3 to stay on the market for, at least, 7-10 years.

it really depends on the games, despite what other people try to tell you.
the thing to do is look at their current line-up, along with upcoming titles, and see which ones you look like more.
