The animals upkeep is costly. The farmers have to source food for them to give them energy to grow, but given that most of the energy the animals eat is used for other life processes, alot of this energy (and so the money spent on food) is 'wasted'.
Also farmers have to vaccinate livestock (and in the UK they run the risk of loosing the herd to disease, ie FMD) The transport and housing all contribute to increase the overall price of animal based products.

Lets use eggs for example. Grain for chickens need to be paid for. This cost then must be Incorporated into the cost for the eggs and the price per kilo for the raw chicken meat that follows. All food that comes from plants must have a cost. As most animal meat is derived from them eating plant food this must be Incorporated into the final cost of meat.

Because you have to feed plants to the animals and provide living space for the animals and generally look after them. If you just grow plants and eat them it's a lot cheaper and doesn't take up as much space.

Animals are generally more expensive to maintain and harvest than plants. They need to be fed and watered and kept free of disease (so do plants, but not so much). Turning animals into meat is quite labour intensive.
