Does anyone else find it bizarre that in order to rent a flat in Britain you have to provide the landlord with everything but a blood test.

Security deposit. okay.

Two refs. Okay

But bank statements; a guarantor; a copy of your passport.

Hold on..........................! And you get nothing from them.

Furthermore you`ve got to believe they will act with complete honesty and be totally nonpartisan (not to mention above being bitchy, petty and/or vindictive)...

It ain`t so tough and/or personally invasive in America.

Do you want to live there or not? If you do then comply, if you don't then find someplace that has more suitable terms for you. You do have "free will". Exercise it.

Perhaps USA doesn't have quite so many people turning up at their borders and being let in... plus (I'm going to guess) it's a lot easier to get unsuitable Tenants out of your property

Look at it from the Landlords point of view ..

Deposit is cash & can come from anywhere, and References could be your 2 best mates

Bank Statements = shows you have regular Income and do not spend more than you earn each month (plus it supports you claim to be employed)

Guarantor = some-one who will pay the rent if you can't or won't

Passport = proves you are who you say you are (Bank Statements can be found in many dustbins you know )

I agree with you. I think a deposit and references should suffice. I don't see how having your bank statement helps. After all, you could have all the money in the world, but you can still be a crappy tennant and it does nothing to protect the Landlord. If someone isn't paying the rent, then chuck them out and keep the deposit. Its up to the landlord to write up a decent contract.

You should move to France, they can ask for anything. They ask for a years payslips and often 6 months deposit in advance. If you are youngish ( under thirty) they often ask for a letter from a parent or guardian who will guarantee the rent. In fairness though you have a lot more rights than they do. They cant throw you out if you aren't paying because you have rights once you move into a property so they need to make sure they find a good tenant.

Only references and a deposit are required, anything else is up to the landlord, you can assume that the bankstatements are his way of seeing if you have the money to pay the rent each month and a copy of your passport to prove that you are who you say you are. Not all landlords will ask for this.

well there a a number of places in the US that require that kind of information,

But just a cheesy littel run of the mill place, just ask you for your drivers license, and the deposit, and a couple of refrences,

the Better the place the more security you need to provide them with, and not just financial, Just ask Donald trump,

he is taking over, and elbowing the poor folks out,

if you don't meet the requirements, poof ,homeless you must be.

Wouldn't you if it was your house. My rent man says there are some awful tenants, making a mess of the houses and not paying the rent
