You cannot take your A.D.I. exam until you have held a full, clean licence for 3 years - you must also be over 21 years of age to do so.

Since you are required to take regular 'check tests' after qualifying as an instructor, you can't even begin training until you are 21

To become a driving instructor you must have held a full licence for at least 4 out of the past 6 years.

It is a very costly business which can cost up to 3,000 pounds although you can get loans for this. You have to pass three tests . A theory test
A very hard driving test
A test of Instructional ability

Do get lots of info before doing this as it is a very costly and time consuming qualifying process which can take two years to become fully qualified

Contact the DSA,they produce a pack and charge for it! You need to have held a full licence for 3 1/2 years before applying for your provisional instructors badge. think hard tho' seven days a week working at other peoples convenience often up to 10 pm. Sometimes rushed off your feet (you don't turn down customer's money). Sometimes sitting on your butt,Christmas, kids toys, mortgage due, etc. When you've paid off all your expenses, just making it, then some pratt runs up your chuff, your off the road, the guy behind isn't insured.I did do almost twenty years of it, then retired after developing diabetes and two heart attacks.Hmmm.

Sir, Contact the Department of Transport, Marsham Street,London. Since I was an instructor the rules could have changed. I think you will find that you cannot take the ADI test ubtil you meet the requirements in driving time as a full licence holder. I hope this helps.

You have to have held a full licence for at least 3 years and to sit at the side of a learner. But to be an instructor (ADI) you have to 21 years of age
