I moved into a community where they have garbage disposals installed. I've never had one before. I've been living here for 2 months and it just dawned on me that I might need to maintain it. Would I ever need to get it emptied? What is a good way of cleaning it? I've heard of grinding ice cubes in it once a week and running hot, soapy water through it.

Garbage disposals do not require periodic maintenance. They do not need emptying, the ground food goes down the drain. If you want to make it smell better you could grind up a lemon in it.

Run it, and if you have to, dig the stuff out...
