The reason i ask this question is because it depends on who you are talking to. I dont believe that America should be the poster child of civlization. Having the latest technology and human "free" rights does not account for civilization. How can we be the most civilized when when we have politicians in office like Mr. Craig, have the best healthcare system and people are dying unecessarily because they cant afford a Rx med, kids no longer think of the traditional family as having a mother and father, but having 2 daddy and 2 mothers is accepted. Our men are dying in foreign counntries in record numbers for no apparent reason; I truly question the civilzation of this place we call America. Lets look at other countries, even though poor; most of these countries dont have same sex households, morrally they value the family structure and their kids respect the mother and father and the extended family is considered just as important. These poorer countries realize what matters.

Being civilized means that while you don't agree with someone's lifestyle, or that when they don't share your value system - you don't condemn them or feel as though they should have fewer rights and privileges in society.

Civilized is having respect for them. Civilized is fighting for the rights of all people in your society - not just the ones you find acceptable.

You're trying to sound sincere about this, but it seems like the issue you're really trying to attack is the idea of same sex relationships between adults with children. Seriously, you don't know anything about the lives those children are leading. Whether it's good or bad, it's none of your business.

As far as war goes, we're not the only ones at fault here. And money for presciption meds.. there usually are ways to get money if you're looking for it. I think some of them are called "jobs".. Hmmm..

Morally, other cultures are a lot more restricted. If you step out of line, you end up in a bad situation, while for most circumstances in the US, it's just a minor thing. The poorer countries realize what matters? Yeah, eating and surviving.

"Civilization" is a technical term for a form of culture with the following charactoristics:

1) Literacy
2) Hierarchy
3) Urbanization
4) Specialization

America thinks of itself as a civilization because it is one. Whether or not it's values conform to some (supposed) higher morality, is another question entirely. Whether you personally approve of America's values is yet another question.

The basic premise is presumptive.Who said that America is the most civilized country but civilized it is in it's own way.Historically,European countries have been and still are more civilized than the rest of the world and they have had the advantage of an heritage.

Japan has the newest technology and the Netherlands have the personal freedom. So the US contribution to civilization looks even slimmer. Their contribution to trade, however, is impressive.
