i can think of several states that glamorized the military and felt that no criticism should ever be leaven on it.

heroic, maybe. but i don't feel that just because you put on a uniform you are above accountability.
in fact, you should be held to a higher standard.

of course we need a military. i never said we didn't.
however we can have a military that isn't glamorized or paraded around or has this mystique like they are absolutely untouchable.
that is bad for america.

i guess that begs the question, why do we have to honor and revere anyone? do you not have faith in humans enough for them to make their own decisions without a model to base themselves on? isn't that what the free market is all about? taking responsibility for yourself?
and if not, why do you think someone being paid to kill people in the name of some intangible ideal like "nationalism" is the right model for the country? sounds a lot like a terrorist to me.

All cultures throughout human history have honored their warriors.
Especially the infallible (in libs minds) Native Americans. The reason isn't very difficult to figure out. The Warrior is the Protector and Savior.
Who would you prefer our culture honored instead? ACLU lawyers? College professors?

It's because the military is a cross section of the finest people America has, without regard to "education", wealth or social status. They put up with hardships that many citizens simply wouldn't tolerate, and do so without much compensation. They put themselves in harm's way daily, while others from their own country insult them and demean their efforts. The states that glamorize the military are the ones that recognize what it is to be an American and offer no apologies for their patriotism.

The military is not glamorized. They do not parade around. They are doing a job, that relatively few will do. You look at hollyweird and the totally screwed up nut jobs that are made to be hero's or the thugs in sports that are made out to be leaders of the community and then you have the audacity to whine about the military? At least they are doing something positive for this country, like keeping your ability to whine about them as one of your freedoms.

The military is held to higher standards, read the UCMJ. The military is respected because they put their lives on the line and don't complain about everything (like everyone else these days).

Romanticise a war, call on the patriots...where else are you going to get recruits? Sure helps when you got Blackwater arming terrorists!

Without the military you wouldn't have a country. They risk their life to defend yours. The least you can do is give them the respect they deserve. When this country gets a intelligent leader we may have peace again.

To all the posters wetting themselves over this question, I suggest you read Eric Hoffer's "The True Believer."
