Only if the government of the country where you buy the land agrees to it. If you buy an island off the coast of Maine or Nova Scotia, they belong to you but are still part of the U.S. or Canada.
A better way would be to find a shallow area of the ocean more than 200 miles from any other country's coast and dump a lot of sand, dirt and rocks until you create an island. But remember to know that you are not within the Economic Exclusion Zone (200 miles) of any other country because technically they own the seabed out to that distance and if land were to appear in that zone, the country that owns the seabed would probably lay claim to it.

Anyone can start their own country, but the problem is that few will take your new country seriously, and recognition of your country will not be forthcoming.
Recognition of a nation state is important. When for example a country gains independence, it looks for recognition from the international community (the major powers, the U.N.). After recognition, the new country can have diplomatic relations with established countries.
If you start your own country somewhere, it's unlikely the international community will consider you a country unless you had significant resources and population. Even then, it's not guaranteed.

Dear,
When are you starting your new Country. If I may suggest, the best will be in North Pole or South Pole. Over there you don't need to buy the Land. Are your going to be the Emperor, King, Calif, Sultan, Czar, Chancellor or President of your Kingdom/Nation/Country. May I know the name of your Kindom. What's the name of your currency. What the porpulation of your country?. Do you have a capital city. What will be the colour of your flag and how many stripes. Are you yourself will be your country's representative to the United Nation Organization. Do you have politic or you youself will be All in One and One in All.
Wishing you the Best of Luck.
"Von Voyage".

No you cannot. The land is still part of the US and as it was decided upon by the Civil War you cannot secede.
You can acquire some land that is not claimed by any country and declare it your country if you like. That land would probably be uninhabited and it would be a country of one and you would probably not like living there by yourself.

This isn't as daft as it may seem, There is a chap who bought an island in the West Indies. It is an independent country now, issuing its own stamps etc. I don't think it has much of a population, 4 or 5 people, however it can set up its own consulates and embassies if it so wishes.

Try and go to the country -side.
Look for a sheep's farm.
Sign up as a shepeherd first.
Then try and round up those sheeps wandering in the fields.
With two empty hands without the wooden staff.
With practices and success.
Then put the great dreams into practices.
What do you think?

Buy an island in the Caribbean or somewhere and claim it as an independent state. then set it up as a tax haven attracting rich, powerful people who will support you. then offer 'state' money to beautiful women to come and live on your tropical paradise. you should also set up some kind of state circus to give your new country legitimate.
if this works, i volunteer to be minister of the appointment of beautiful women and circus affairs on the island.

if we all gave you a few pound I'm sure there is empty land maybe in Africa and take all the illegal/legal immigrants from the UK and you have enough people for a large city. You could call it multiracial city.
