apparently this field and adjoining feild aprox 20 acres, used to be natural lake,which has been landfilled ,and now used for grazing ,replaced with a man made damn, reservoir further up the valley! coincidence or not there is a Roman forte only a couple of 100 yards awy?

take some to the university and have it analyzed.... the last one I heard of like this was where a river had changed it's course... the clay was excellent for throwing pots (pottery) and some folks paid dearly to get it to use for that purpose!....

There would have been a lake there, as clay is a form of sediment. In fact the primary mineral in clay is Kaolinite, which is formed by the erosion of feldspar.

If it used to be a lake you are most likely looking at silt unless the landfilling was done on purpose in which case its whatever they stuck in there!

Wow! Clay minerals. Kaolinite, ilmenite, smectite, I am sure there are more I can't remember right now.
