Yes when I was in primary school and the teacher was selecting who would be in the choir to sing carols at the usual Christmas concert. i put my hand up and was told "No,not you Jane(that is my name) you have a voice like a foghorn. From then till now i never believe in the saying: "Sticks and stones can break your bones but names will never hurt you" that is rubbish. For as a six year old I was shattered and since then every time someone mentions Christmas carols it reopens the old wound of 15 years, its something I have never forgotten.
Words can leave a wound that may never heal and at best they leave some form of scar in our physche.

I have been hurt by people's cruel words plenty of times, and I NEVER forget, though I may forgive. However, nobody has ever succeeded in crushing my spirit, and I hope nobody ever will. It's my spirit, faith and determination that get me through the hard times, and it is my spirit that enables me to rise above the pettiness of others.

Yes, I have been hurt deeply by cruel words. I still have trouble dealing with them. I try to put it aside, live my life, and forget about them, but in quiet moments, when I least expect it, the memories return and all the scabs are torn off again. To the extent I can, I put them out of my life. If they had apologized, I would have dealt much better with it, but when they were cruel, knew it, and left you there, it is hard to put away.

Yes. I had one of those little bottles of Schnapps that they give you on airplanes and It fell out of my pocket as I was leaving the airport and a truck ran over it and crushed my spirits...

Sorry, Actually, my big brother used to say the most horrible things when I would be excited about something. I come to him all happy and he'd say something that totally rained on my parade. It used to crush my spirits until I told my sister and she said: "Oh I know he does that to me all the time, he's just jealous, don't even listen to him hes a jerk. Just ignore him."

I was so relieved, I didn't know that was an option. He hasn't crushed my spirits since and now when I'm excited about something, I tell my sister about it instead.

I'm not an easy person to have my spirit crushed. But yes, there is 1 person in my husband's family that did it. The worst of that situation was that the person said it while all were talking and almost nobody realized about it.........but my husband. (and myself of course). I dont get over it...I put it in a corner of my memory, and goes on with my life as if the person doesnt exist.
I dont forget and I dont forgive....but can live very calm.

sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me...lol...anyone remember their parent teaching them this..it did not always work though. I guess you look at who is saying the cruel words, (Are they important to your life or not?) If not, let it go. But if the person is important to your life, then yes it can hurt a lot, I try to get over it by talking with them and fixing the problem. We all say things when we get angry. But its not worth it to lose a good friendship.

So many times I've had my spirit crushed by so many people's words. One of these ocassions is when the person I consider my best friend said my boyfriend was mean that if I died that time he wouldn't even appear at my burial. It took me prayer to and trusting God to get over it, and I still pray and continue trusting God to turn the negative to positive.

Oh yes, several times already. And you know, the closer the person is to me, the more painful it is to bear. It is all here in my heart. And I always remember them and I doubt I'll ever forget them. But then, I always choose to believe that it will be better for me to remember them with healed memories, It removes the rancor and pity, then I can move on.

Yes, I have. I'm sure most people have to some extent.
How long did it take to get over it? Hard to say...when I think of it, it still is incredibly painful, but I have tried to put it behind me...not sure how successful I've been, though...
