Historically, architecture is the concretization of a culture's beliefs and values. Ornamentation is merely one of many signifying features which can elucidate the underlying values of the society or culture in question.

Relativism in architecture starts when mankind identifies posibilities which transcend the time and place of a culture.

The starting point for this "movement" is widely hailed as Robert Venturi's "Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture." (Google it)

Since then, relativism has manifested in architectural styles such as, post modernism, neo-rationalism and deconstruction.

Perhaps the greatest relativist architects are:

FRANK GEHRY
PETER EISENMAN
REM KOOLHASS
CHARLES WILLARD MOORE
MICHAEL GRAVES
JON JERDE
RICARDO LEGORRETA
JAMES STIRLING.

You will see what I mean instantly if you google any one of them.

You can never relate the two for relativism in philosophy is the theory that says truths are relative and may vary according to individual, the group the place or time. aAlthough architecture can express aesthetic ideas from the most restrained Utilitarianism to extravagantly ornate decoration. Both have the different places in philosophy.

Thanks to your question. Have a wonderful day!
