Like everything else, the people who hate it know nothing about it. The parents who want Harry Potter on banned books lists have never read any of the series, and they will tell you why should they, lest they be tempted by the devil?

Because some people don't want to feel like they are jumping on the bandwagon and refuse to even give it a try. (That was me a while back until one of my co-workers shoved the book in front of me and told me to just read it! I was hooked instantly!)
Others because of religous reasons.
