My brother was an office manager for a patent attorney in Minneapolis, Minnesota. You register your article with them after paying a fee, the article is now yours to make, it belongs entirely to you and, no one else, your given a number and it's registered with the U.S. Patent office in Washington D.C. this number is yours forever. Well, that's not entirely true, it's yours for like 99 years then you have to reapply.
It costs roughly $600.00 to apply but there has to be a search, this is costly for the attorneys and it's insured. It ll takes time also. They go through libraries, newspapers, etc, it takes awhile.

All these numbers pertain to your article and your invention, like your name, it's yours.
