You have to chop it down and count the rings in the stump. You can also use a device that drills a hole in the tree all the way through, then when you take out the drilling device, it brings out what it cut through, and you can count the rings that way.

When you cut down a tree the stump had rings in it.
The number of rings in side the stump is the number of years old the tree is.
If you don't want to cut it and still find out how old it is well then I am not to sure.

You know, when you cut a branch or some part of a tree, there would be some rings. Count the rings. Each ring represents ten years. Cool eh?

Ryan seems most clued up. If you want to find the age without chopping it down and killing it use an hollow drill which will give you a core you can count the rings on. And it is one ring for one year.
