Hello Robbo,

The definition of 'Benefit of the Doubt' is:

A favorable judgment granted in the absence of full evidence.

In other words although there is strong suspicion that someone did something or committed a crime, there is no firm evidence to prove it.

Therefore they are given the benefit of the doubt.

Trust, trust trust..You have to trust him no matter how hard it is. I know this for a fact. If for some reason you have doubts, then ask him up front about it. Do not accuse him, merely ask him if he has heard from her at all etc...If it is just his ex, and no children involved, he should have no other reason to talk to her if it is over, unless the two of you have discussed whether or not they can remain friends. However, if there are children involved, you must understand that he does need to have contact with her because of those children. (I gather from your question, that this is not the case). I know it is hard to trust him, but if he has never given you a reason to not trust him, then it should be okay. It is harder to regain a person's trust once you have lost it, this I know from experience.

Someone thinks you did something wrong but there is not enough evidence to prove it, hence there is some doubt that you did it. In these circumstances, to give you the benefit of the doubt is to assume you are innocent rather than guilty.
