The bus is cheaper than the train, the train can be more expensive than flying. Jetstar from Ballina (link to Byron) can be competitive with the bus as far as price is concerned and it is certainly quicker.

Byron to Sydney is about 800km. There are few steep hills these days and it is an excellent road. The bus makes quite a few stops along the way to set down and pick up passengers and that adds to the travel time. It shouldn't take more than 12 hours.

If you want to go by train, there are two a day. The daytime train is far better than the night train. Countrylink provides a bus service from Byron to Casino where you catch the train to Sydney.

yes, and maybe you should look up the train service, heaps of backpackers take the train and if it still exists from Byron to Sydney, it is safer than the bus and there is a dining car with a bar if you need to wet your whistle. It is a short trip between both, take snacks if you are on the bus or train as the food stops or dining car are expensive.
