Republicans say that the Democrats want a Mommy state that provides welfare, daycare and healthcare. Republicans want to protect the population from gay marriage, abortion and gun control. As far as some foreign nations are concerned, we are "the daddy state", in that they rely on us to protect them so that many of them can spend their resources on things other than a strong defense, rely on our foreign aid, humanitarian efforts, etc. The democrats, of course are the ones that want "mommy government" to take care of them. Conservatives want government to stay out of our lives, except to protect us militarily.

If you're referring to the government protecting us from terrorists and other potential threats. That is and has been the main purpose of government, going all the way back to the founding fathers!
Would you rather we have no military or protection from the government....? Crazy liberals.

It is the job of the government to protect it's citizens from hostile actions. Not to hand out free health care to those who wont work....
