The best thing to keep ponds clear is a healthy population of oxygenating plants. When you fill your pond there will be an initial greening that should settle down and the water will clear after a few days. Let this process happen and don't keep cleaning and refilling with mains water. Greening and clouding is often caused by keeping fish in a closed environment, feeding them eventually produces a fertiliser that will feed the algae. If you want a crystal clear pond it will have to be a reflecting pool with no fish or one that you constantly vacuum out. Our pond often clouds at the beginning of Spring and is clear again by late Summer/Autumn. Moving water also helps, you could install a solar powered fountain.

Glue traps for mice help control roaches. They're pre-baited, non-toxic, and there is no odor (unless you get the ones that contain anesthetic). Even with small children, you can keep them in some problem areas like under the stove, refrigerator, and sinks. I keep a spray bottle of Windex, diluted dish soap, or even hand soap around in case I see a roach or ants. I prefer spraying over smashing. It works fast; roaches are dead within 30 seconds or so if you hit them right. (It apparently clogs their spiracles and suffocates them.) You just have to be quick or accurate because they run like mad after the first hit. Comet cleanser is supposed to form a barrier that ants will not cross, but I'm thinking that could be about as toxic as indoor chemical spraying. Someone mentioned using chalk. Keep in mind that chalk can contain lead, which is not safe in any amount for children or pregnant women, whether ingested or inhaled. And because it is stored in bone, lead may pose a hazard for future children that an exposed female may conceive down the road. There are many great suggestions here; I've learned a lot!

Any more plants will just clog the pond.you can have a good pond using carbon filters,in a small rockery at one end of the pond. The best way is algae filtration,or a waterfall. You pump the water up to a small top pond on top of a rockery formation and run it back into the pond, gradually moss and algae form on it.The water is cleaned and aeriated on the way down.JUST THE COST OF A PUMP.This method is used in a lot of continental exhibition setups.

Put a pump in that shoots the water up them splashes back into the pond, this "AERATES" the water, the oxygen will burn off any anerobes in the water. FISH, put some fish in the pond, no insect or mosquito larve will stand a chance with fish in there. Cover the top with chicken wire to protect from preditors.

I bought my husband a pond vac for his pond. You attach it to a hosepipe and run it along the bottom of the pond and it cleans it out, no chemicals involved. It cost about £25 plus the hosepipe. He's used it twice this year and our pond is crystal clear
