Scream is a 'horror' movie in so much that it follows the rules of the horror movie genre, and that in itself is the purpose of the trilogy. Many people seem to say that it is not scary, but it isn't supposed to be (unless you're very young), it is Wes Craven's pastiche of all the movies that he has created, and a satirical look at the genre in general. It is a film that takes the mickey out of the subtle (and not so subtle) rules of horror that have made modern day scary movies (to that point anyway) a little bit of a joke. It is a movie about movies, a great piece despite its popcorn violence, and is a good watch. This is why, in my opinion, the film scary movie is so lame, because who wants to watch a spoof of a film that is a joke to begin with?

When I first tried to watch Scream I made it through the first 5-10 minutes and then left because I was scared sh*tless. But keep in mind that I'm not a big horror fan to begin with and I was watching it alone in an empty movie theatre late at night (I was a projectionist doing a dry run before the opening).

I think it's meant to be kind of a satire about typical horror films while at the same time having its own horror theme. Watch the entire film and you'll understand better.

There's some satiric aspects to it, but it's definitely horror (whether they meant it to be or not). If they'd wanted to make a pure comedy/satire, they wouldn't have shown the blood and gore and they would have shown more of the killer missing (for instance).

It was meant to be more comedy than anything. it was Wes Craven making fun of himself and he did it very well.
