I've never done it purposely, but at a sleepover when I was in high school my friends all swore I floated in my sleep. I don't remember it--wish I did tho!!
"Levitation is a phenomenon of psychokinesis (PK) in which objects, people, and animals are lifted into the air without any visibly physical means and float or fly about. The phenomenon has been said to have occurred in mediumship, shamanism, trances, mystical rapture, and demonic possession. Some cases of levitation appear to be spontaneous, while spiritual or magical adepts are said to be able to control it consciously."

You've asked some really good questions, and there are lots of possible answers. The site I paraphrased above looks at the scientific, spiritual, and magical aspects/thoughts on the levitation mystery... that's why I like it. It could also help answer you questions better than I can, with more detail and covering more of each aspect than I could here.
However you find it, good luck with finding what you want to know!!

Yes. It's been ages though. It happened when I was maybe 12, 13 or so. My mother had just remarried, and my family had just moved down to Alabama, the northern part of the state, near the Tennessee River.
And, to make a long story short, it was stressful. I have asthma. Humidity is not my friend My main allergies are to dust and mold. So I wasn't a happy camper back then.
Getting good sleep was an issue. Except for those nights....
Three different nights I had crashed, pretty much exhausted into the bed.
And three different *mornings* I had awakened...fully and completely *woke up* mind you, to discover that I was floating a good 4-6 inches off of my bed, taking the bedsheet with me.
I've had witnesses too, both of my sisters back then *saw this.*
Basically the deal was....I couldn't move so much. It was a bit like floating on water, when I breathed, it effected my altitude. I could move a little, enough to reach my hand down to the bed, but if I sat up or shifted my posture (spinal position) at all, I fell back to the bed.
That was the problem. I'd eventually have to sit up and get up, and when I did, I'd crash into the bed. And being the fat kid in my family...well, this made noise. At 6 or 7 in the morning, which annoyed the parents. Eventually they got tired of the weirdness and moved my "bedroom" out to the back porch, forcing me to sleep on a daybed that was way too small for me.
That was when the levitation episodes ended. -_-
I think some of it was that earlier on, I was sleeping on a bed with a metal frame, and then later I wasn't. In other words, that it was a bio-magnetic thing, that my growing body and nervous system was reacting to some sort of magnetic anomaly, that was amplified by the metal frame of the first bed.
As for it being ominous....actually, the floating itself felt good. I think it's other *people's* reactions to the floating that aren't so good. It reminds me of the things yoga people say about "kundalini", about it being the "maverick energy". Essentially when we are younger, we express this stuff spontaneously and naturally. But in time other *people*, usually of the adult persuasion, punish and surpress and discourage this sort of thing until people start to *block themselves*.
And it's my humble opinion that *levitation* could be one of those things. That it isn't common, but also...that other people's negativity and nay-saying just doesn't help either.
Thanks for your time. ^_^ Have a Star!
