They were all trying to build their empires and thus it was a huge nationalist movement brought about by the countries. They all thought they were better than anyone else.

Unfortunately they did not realize the destructive potential that all of them had (tanks debuted in this war and this was the first time that semi and fully automatic weapons were a standard, as well as grenades, motors, and aerial combat). They were also fighting in a modified line formation that had been around for ages, this formation was a suicidal idea with the new death technology that came out at this time.

Before the war started in earnest the Trades Unions and other radical movements in various European countries demonstrated and declared they would not fight. 'Don't worry' said one leader 'when they hear the sound of the military bands they will rush to join up'. And it was so. It is very easy for Governments to appeal to the greater good, rightly or wrongly, and have the masses follow them.

high spirits had nothing to do with it. The Balkans were (and still are ) a political powder-keg. The war started basically over which Royal Family would rule Europe. By the end of the war no Royal Family had that kind of power and never would again.

Europeans remembered "war" being a very different thing before all the technological advances like the machine gun. It was a very different war.
