Live longer? Than what? Your question makes no logical sense. Likewise, the movie also made no logical sense. I can see the possibility of getting onto a proper trajectory to hit the moon. After all, it is a pretty big target and it is moving on a predictable path. The question is: how did he soft land on the moon? When he ran out of fuel, he was moving at a pretty good clip. I didn't see anything which looked like retro rockets to slow the descent of what appeared to be tons of metal... in theory, as they said in the movie, you only need fuel to get half way, and then you just fall the rest of the way from there. Sort of like climbing a hill and rolling down the other side. Except with the moon being 1/6th the mass of the Earth, the tipping point is more like 2/3rd's of the distance to the moon where the atraction to the moon exceeds the attraction to the Earth. It is a nice ending, to have him make it to the moon and then die there, but in reality, not really very likely. However, if I were in his position, I'd rather go out peacefully by running out of oxygen than painfully from cancer. And look at the view he had at the end!

We know we can - been there.. done it ! And, we HAD plans for a base to be built in the '70s. We have had our entire manned space program TRASHED. The Saturn V was a superb rocket. It could have served us well into this century. We had a nuclear powered upper stage rocket, tested & proven. It was going to be used to take astronauts to Mars, we had that worked out too. Before they were all gone, the Saturn V was used to lift - in ONE SHOT, our Skylab space station into orbit. It weighed over 100 tons and had the interior room of a 3 bedroom house ! They even could 'fly' around in the upper floor, they tested a rocket-pack so the astronaut could zip around and add onto the Skylab. We actually had 2, flight ready. But.. as you know now, that was all purposely trashed. Yes, we can live on the Moon. In fact - they wanted a 2nd base, on the far side of the Moon - for radio astronomy. It is very 'quiet', no extraneous rf to interfere with observation.

His character had incurable cancer, so it's fair to say he was checking out the way he wanted to go.
