Does it mean the ability to grasp concepts easily? Is it the amount of knowledge you know? Is it how well you remember the knowledge you've gained over the years? Is it learning from your past mistakes? Is it the potential knowlege you can gain? What do you consider it to be?

Understanding a concept, ability to grasp an idea. knowledge, being able to distinguish the difference, playing out the act verses the consequences in ones own mind.
Absorption of facts. One may be smart in a particular field, but not have a clue in another.

To me, it means having the ability to learn and apply new concepts.

Smart does not necessarily mean wise. One can know many things, but how to use them is quite different.
