My ex-boyfriend and I had a baby together and we filed for a marriage license in South Carolina(i live in california). We never picked the marriage license up from the courthouse. I want to know if we are married? Or married by law?

You have to be married by a minister or a legal person in the courthouse and then have the person who married you and generally two witnesses sign the final certificate which is then mailed to you and then you are officially married and can submit the paperwork to combine insurance, bank accounts and your wife to change her name but there has to be a ceremony whether its in the courthouse or by an ordained minister, you cant get married just by getting license, that is only half of the process, it just gives you a right to get married within that state. Your not married hun. Not untill you both say I DO. The license also expires after a certain amount of time, unsure of exact time for SC. Hope this helps. Take Care.-Rachel.

No, you are not married. The license is only granting you permission to marry. You would have had to go to the courthouse and officially get married to be married. you are free and clear. You are single.

my understanding is a marriage license has to be signed by the both of you, at least one witness and the judge or person who married you - the officiate

You are probably married. But, there is not reason to guess. Just call the courthouse where you submitted your marriage license application. They will tell you.

No. It has to be signed. If it's not signed by witnesses then you aren't married.
