I have one of their albums, and I see absolutely nothing "emo" about them, with the exception of the song Carpal Tunnel of Love. Why does everyone say they're emo?

Please don't bring up whether their music is good or bad.

Hair style, choice of lyrics, dress code, and style of music to name a few. You can't think of 'emo' in relation to one band, but a broad genre sort of like 'alternative.' Now, back in the days, 'punk' was overused and abused, and has since branched out into numerous categories, but emo falls along the same pitfalls. It's just a word some use to categorize a certain style of music. You could said Fall Out Boy is emo-punk, even though most would disagree. Hope that helps.

Once again, emo is a brand of '80s hardcore punk that focused on introspective lyrics. It died very early on in the '90s, and it has absolutely nothing to do with post-2000 pop-punk or post-hardcore bands.

They have an emo look - a very emo look in fact with the the typical emo haircuts and dark clothes. Other than that there is not much, they are not emo in the sense that they are an emotional hardcore punk band and their songs are no more emotional than a non-emo band. In fact their sound is fairly typical rock - though I've only heard that thanks for the memories song.

Sorry to burst your bubble but they are the poster children of emo. Don't worry, I won't bring up whether their music is good or bad. The very fact that you had to make that statement indicates that deep down you already know the answer.

the term emo has changed drastically over the years...we all know it used to mean hardcore scary love music...i mean it was pretty hardcore..angry [but loving], screaming, loud, passionate, bloody, scary, poetic but still heartfelt and thoughtful type love songs....now emo describes pansy weak lame love songs from guys in bands who wear guy-liner and all that pansy stuff...
some would argue that isn't what emo means now...but face it that is what the new meaning of emo means...bands aren't dreadfully beautiful and passionate as they used to be when it came to love songs...now they sound all mopey and annoying...it's become the standard to sound bored and mopey when they [the new "rock" bands] do their lame-*** love songs...
so is FOB emo...i don't know...never listen to their music...but i thought i'd let people know what emo means in the 2000's...blame the new meaning of emo on bands like good charlotte, SoCo, Panic! and i could go on and on...
why aren't bands intensely passionate anymore when it comes to their love songs...?

FOB is not Emo but the thing is, is that they really don't fit in to a category right now. Alt Music went out the window with the whole Emo thing.

Fall Out Boy is easily the best band EVA!

Everyone says that they're emo and they make you emo.

If that's true, why is it that I three friends that are considered preppy and they luv FOB {{and lots of similar bands that people say are emo and make u emo, but totally DON'T}}

I found that those sorta bands helped me find myself. They're helping me through tons of crap that I cna' wait to escape, but 'cause of them, I'm still livin'!

FOB AND MCR TO THE END!

Emo...pop punk, etc. I label them several things, and people keep denying the genre. I'm guessing they're an alternative rock band. The kind of alternative rock in the 00's.
