genetics does have a play in how your body processes food... but your environment has a lot to do with it too.

so there is a 50/50 chance of genetic weight issues... then if you provide an environment that is well rounded in the kitchen and active in the backyard... your child's risks continue to go down the more positive nutritional and physical activity you add....

do you plan to breastfeed??? read a little on breastfeeding and it's link to lessening risks of childhood and adult obesity... another great thing to do to help reduce his/her chances of weight issues... here's one article/study: ""Formula-fed babies are more at risk for obesity in later life
A study of 32200 Scottish 3 year old children found that the incidence of obesity was significantly lower among those who had been breastfed, after adjusting for socioeconomic status, birthweight and gender. Another study, this one of Czech children, found that the even older children (6 -14) who had been breastfed were less at risk for overweight/obesity. Additionally, a German study found that 4.5% of formula fed children are obese, while only 0.8% of breastfed children have this condition"", it's #37 on this 101 reasons to breastfeed your baby list http://www.promom.org/101/

That is such a difficult thing to predict...Yes genetics does have a bit to play in this but also lifestyle makes a huge difference in obesity.
I became overweight with my first pregnancy and my husband has a bit of a gut on him due to his disability he isn't able to get the exercise he needs to maintain his weight. However our son is on the thin side at nearly 4 years old. Active little monster is what he is...We keep healthy food in the house and only allow fruit and cheese as snacks.
Raise the baby to make healthy choices and he's fairly unlikely to become overweight.

I'm overweight because of a thyroid condition. My daughter doesn't look like she will be. As long as your diet is healthy (Your eating habits can make her eating habits) then she will not. Overweight or underweight isn't always hereditary. It generally is how you live your life and how you eat that determines whether your child is over or underweight.

While genetics has something to do with it, it has more to do with the family's eating habits. Just make sure that you are feeding them healthy foods and snacks and that they get adequate exercise everyday instead of sitting in front of the TV, computer, or video games.

the risk will be slighty more if you have a boy. My huband is tall and thin, so is his dad. My side of the family is short and round. I had a boy and he is like his daddy!

This is not necessarily true. But, you will need to watch your child's intake once he becomes a toddler. You will need to set good examples. Provide excellent nutrition instead of fried nasty fatty junk foods. Avoid sodas, juices, and empty calories. And, teach your little one that exercise is FUN.
