I just my leopard gecko on Sunday. I took it out sunday and it seemed fine. Then yesterday i took him out and let him crawl on my bed and stuff. Last night my brother tried to pick him up and it turned its head to try to bite him it looked like so that freaked me out. Now today I put gloves on because I was afraid he was going to bite me. And i didn't pick him up because i didnt want to frighten him. so i just pet him while in his cage he turned around fast and hissed at me twice...even if they dont bite im afraid of just they're actions. I wanted a friendly gecko:(...what can i do to change his behavior?

You cannot do anything to change the actions of the leopard gecko. For some reason he/she felt scared that is why he bit. Leopard geckos are usually very friendly. Mine has bitten me if I was too quick in picking him up or if he was eating. Continue to hold your gecko and be very calm when you do. If you are scared of it then I would suggest getting a different pet. Not a reptile. Good luck with your gecko they are very awesome pets.

The more you handle him the quicker he will learn to tolerate it. He's still very much new to everything that's going on around him, and especially if he's young, his behaviour is normal. For the first week, at least stop handling, or just pet him in the tank. After he's settled in, you may start picking him up, but now it's still too early.

What you'll need to work on is the fear of his rapid jolts. You must realize that it can't hurt you, even with a bite a leopard gecko isn't too painful, and that this fear is irrational. So while you spend several minutes daily handling the little guy, watch yourself, and literally try to over come your fear. This confidence will allow you to focus more on taming him.

Also, I personally think that if you, for example, put down a reptile after every time it nips, it learns that whenever it wants to be put down, nipping does the trick. This is another reason to work on your fear.

Good luck! :)

Whoa! Slow down a bit! The little guy is just scared. Give him a couple of weeks to adjust to his new home before attempting to handle him. Then just let him crawl over your hand to get used to you. They can be handled, but some are more accepting than others. Here's a couple of good websites with additonal info:

OK well first of all your not supposed to handle it the first week you get it the little guy its probably stressed i would just leave him alone for a week or two so he/she can adjust to its surroundings and live happily then slowly let it get used to your hand so it can become more tolerant of being held
