Honestly, the 2008 335 is pretty much dead even speed wise with the 2005 M3. The true difference is in the upgraded suspension, brakes, tires, etc on the M3. Handling wise the M3 is better than the regular 335. Or you can get the 335 with the sport package, which gives you the upgraded brakes, suspension, and tires as well.
Basically, if you are going to use the car, I mean really use it... Take it to track days, autocrosses, etc, then get the M3.
If you are going to just drive it and want to go fast, then get the 335.
Plus, if you buy or lease the new 335, then you will get the 40k mile warranty where you don't have to pay for anything except tires. If you get a used M3 and something breaks, then well, that's going to cost you. A lot.

If you can afford to buy instead of lease, buy the 2005 M3. The price won't go down as fast as new 335 when you want to resell it. Actually the price of 2005 M3 might still be higher compared to 2008 335 after 3 yrs. But maybe I'm wrong since E92M3 would be plenty around by then.
However you can get a 4 door 335 but there's no 4 drs E46M3.

Go with the M3. It may be the old E46 but it is still considered an exotic car and has more power than the 335i. Let's not forget that they had add a twin turbo setup to the 335i to get that 300 hp. Unimpressive these days. Nissan's 300ZX twin turbo succeeded to do that 17 years ago with a 3.0 liter V6 engine not a 3.5 liter I6 engine. Also, remember that with the introduction of the higher-priced new M3, a 2005 M3 will be worth about what you going to pay for it now a good 2-3 years from now. The M3 is putting out 333 hp without any turbos or superchargers. Add a supercharger and you could be pushing 400hp for less than what a 335 will costs. Definitely buy the M3.

How can you like BMs and like fast cars, but no nothing about the 335 or M3? YOu should at least know somethinga bout the M3, it's one of the world's best cars.
Anyways, the 335 is based on the new 3 series, while the 05 M3 is based on the E46 3 series.
The new 3 is plenty fast enough....I would get that. I have a 300 hp car, and I rarely get the chance to use all that power. The M3 has 343 hp, while the new 3 has 300. 0-6 takes 5 seconds with the M, while it takes 5.5 seconds with the 3 series.
Do you want comfort, or do you want that extra 40 hp?

peformance-wise not much
a 2005 bmw m3 has an inline 6 cylinder engine producing 333 horsepower. you can find one for around 45,000-50,000.
a 2008 bmw 335 has a twin turbo incline 6 cylinder engine producing 300 horsepower. its priced at about the same price.
their performance numbers are almost identical, but the 09\8 335i has a brand new body style with newer technology so gets much better has mileage. m3 average maybe 18 mpg in mixed driving, and a 335 will average about 25 mpg in mixed driving

Well the M3 is a better performance car and will keep his value longer than the 335. But, alright the 335 is 2008 and the M3 is 2005, so if you want the car for sale the 335 is your choice.

The 2008 335 Will turn more heads and you will still have the warranty for a longer time. I heard that the engine is just as powerful in the 335 as the M3. Go for the 335. Good Luck!

335.
fast enough to be exciting. lower maintenence, lower price, easier to handle and drive, still a BMW through and through. besides 2008, brand new.
M3 where would you really drive it? just like owning a FERRARI or Porsche
. m3 is 8 cylinder while 335 twin turbo 6 cylinder.
yahoo autos has a nice comparison feature you can see them side by side and decide. also look for a test drive.
but finally just think how you would feel in each of them.good luck and have fun shopping hope I HELPED
