Slothmom how in the tarnation are they supposed to be able to harness cow flatulance?
Are they going to hook hoses up to the cows rear ends and suck the gas out of them?
That is just too weird.

Federal contracts they get kickbacks from
Funding for sports stadiums

Not only does cow flatulence add to greenhouse gas emissions, but studies have been made on how to harvest the methane produced by cows to power farms! Studies of alternate energy sources were very big in the 1980s, and I remember reading about a test farm in the section of western Connecticut where I lived at the time. If the farmers could harness some of the gas produced, they could see substantial reduction of their operating expenses. With the high price of oil and gas nowadays, we'll just have to see if they pick this line of inquiry up again.

Methane is a greenhouse gas, and although there are natural sources of this substance (for instance, bogs, swamps, and similar areas where anaerobic decomposition takes place; volcanic activity, etc.), currently the gases from intestinal activity of cattle and from rice plantations are among the major contributors of methane (CH4) to the lower atmosphere.
Here's one scientific research article about this (the contribution of methane from ruminants to global warming):

It was written by researchers from the UK and France, so if you're in the US, it was not your tax dollars that funded the investigation. Also note that this is not new information, it's been know for several years now.

yes, also cow's burping. These activityies contribute greatly to greenhouse gas emissions and gloabl warming. We are trying to convert cows bacteria to ones that produce acetate instead (like kangaroos). If we ate fish and vegetables and got rid of cows altogether the world would be better off. Yes taxpayers have funded some of this research - its a lot better than spending trilliojns of dollars in Iraq. the results will benefit the world greatly

This is one of those things that sounds crazy because of the way people write the articles.

Actually, gas produced by cows contains methane and is a major greenhouse gas. It IS important to the environment, and it's an important investigation.
