You will have to locate the exact area of the smell.
Covering up a smell doesn't work in the long run.
If it's animal urine, especially cat, you may have to replace
the carpeting and padding. If it is saturated into wood flooring you may have to replace the wood floor. We had that problem in a rental house we owned. We had to replace the whole living room wood flooring and subfloor.
If it is mold you may have to do the same things. Good luck!

Give house a thorough cleaning. Light candles, open windows and spray an airfreshener that eliminates odors such as febreze. Depending on what the smell is, spraying Lysol or Oust to kill germs first may help also.

Your landlord probably had the floors professionally cleaned or the walls painted prior to you moving in.
Try leaving your windows open when your home to "air it out."
You can also light candles around the house. Candles have a way of eliminating the smells in rooms.
Also try spraying some Febreeze around your house.

There are professional services that do industrial cleaning. They can find the source and fix it. The landlord is responsible for making the place "habitable". If someone or an animal died there, only a professional can clean it. If the landlord won't cooperate, seek legal counsel. There are very clear housing laws.

possibly mildew smell is lingering around. Sprinkle baking soda around and let it sit for several hours before cleaning it up. Vacuum if on carpet and mop if on a regular floor.

Good old dish soap(not but a few drops) in water with a bit of vinegar. Lots of elbow grease and a scrub brush.
