ive been on the vfd for a year now and i am still not in shape.. i need to be though... the biggest thing to have is upper body strength... one of the best ways to accomplish this is to have a chair behind you .... put your arms behind you on the chair... take and cross your legs, then push your self up and down.... this will help increase your upper body strength... good luck!!!

Do a lot of running. Try running while carrying weights dressed in heavy clothing. Just make sure you stay very hydrated throughout the workout. Lifting weights would help too. Most of your physical work in firefighting will be rushing around with heavy equipment, swinging heavy hand tools, using hoses with a lot of pressure behind them, and climbing ladders. One of the workout I've heard being used by firefighters is dressing them up in their turnout gear and airpacks and running laps, then taking wooden pallets and chopping them up with an axe while wearing the heavy gear. Try stuff like that. The best thing you can do though is build up your endurance because if you're out of shape going into a burning structure lugging around heavy equipment and possibly a victim can tire you out quick.
