Is it actually called a "six finger plant"? I've never heard of it and I can't find it online. Therefore, we need more detailed info. in order to be able to help you. Thick trunk and thick leaves don't really help. However, when I hear thick leaves I automatically imagine a succulent which would mean that you should not water it often. Thick leaves hold water and over watering would result in root rot. The best way to tell when your plant needs water is to insert your finger about 4inches into the soil and if it is dry then give it some water. Also, most house plants require indirect sun light or bright artificial light. Hope this helps some.
Good Luck

Can you provide more info? Why do you call it "six finger plant"? Is that the name of it? Most plants require less water in the cooler months, of course. If it's a succulent variety, then you can water less frequently. If you have the plant indoors during winter and you keep your home quite home with dry heat, try to provide some source of humidity or else you'll need to continue watering frequently. As for sunlight, I once heard that if a plant has dark leaves it needs less sunlight, lighter leaves more sunlight. Try looking it up on the Internet. There are plenty of sites that show photos of the plant varieties.
