Because they do not exist according to the General Accounting Office, therefore they are unacounted for and unacountable. Isn't that special?

Historically, mercenary armies have always been used to do the dirty work official armies just could not be seen getting their hands into. Plus, this way of doing things allows the war party to provide only official (military) casualty statistics, thus helping to throw smoke on the situation on the ground.
Does anybody really still believes this is about democracy?

Because mercenaries act with impunity...rather dangerous considering that they can use their tactics anywhere, including here in the United States.
Today I learned that there are over 180,000 contractors in Iraq....more even than US troops.
SOMEONE has to protect them I imagine.
I cannot help but to sympathize with the innocents in Iraq...which far outweigh those we define as 'insurgents,al quaeda, etc.
Just an excuse to stay there I imagine.

and for those who think mercenaries have not killed innocents in Iraq (and other places as well) take your foolish blinders off!
some of you

Since none of them has yet to be convicted of anything, how about we consider the fact that it ,may be untrue. But I guess it's just easier to convict someone in the court of public opinion. Until I learn otherwise I will assume their innocence,or that it was at worst the collateral damage that often happens in combat.

Considering that Bush has kept the US out of treaties and troops out of UN positions to keep them from being subject to prosecution in case of war crimes...
I expect this is just more attempts to evade oversight.

Who would hold them accountable?

The US certainly doesn't want to -- it doesn't have anything to gain by reigning them in, and it gets a lot of benefit from plausible deniability because they are "independent".

And the Iraqi govt cannot hold the accountable -- because the US won't let them.
