Why would you want to sit there and type in a message, which is very difficult to do on a phone, when you can just leave a voice message? You have to hit the button 2 or 3 times for some letters just to get one letter. It takes forever and is a real nuisance.
Why in the world is this so popular? What am I missing?
Also, why would you do this in a car? You shouldn't use a cell phone and drive anyway, but at least if you just leave a voice message, you can keep one hand on the steering wheel and watch the road. But if you text something, don't you basically need 2 hands, and are not able to watch the road at all? I know people who do this, and so I'm wondering. (One of my friends just died as a result of this in fact).

Text Messaging is a mode of communication via an inexpensive and fairly fast way of getting the information across to the receiving party. Leaving a voice-mail, you can. But the chances of the receiving party, getting down to listening to the vocie mail might take several hours if the party is busy or has a forgetful memory or people who procrastinate. Whereas the text message reaches almost instantly once sent and the sender can be sure, the sent message has done it's required duty, as would the receiving party.
Not only do people of this modern technology era send info via this method but also greetings and choose it as a way of communicating with a loved one abroad or in the same country. Some people are so apt in text messaging that they do not even need two hands to do it, nor do they need to see the phone to do it. They have this innate sense of applicating the number of pushes to a button to get the desired alphabet. I for one, am proud i can do so.
Text Messaging does not cause the accidents on the road. People who are irresponsible, cause the accidents on the road. It is one's own decision to make, whether or not to do something. One is well educated enough by the Media and Government that, due to actions as text messaging while driving causes the loss of concentration in some if not all. I am sure in most countries it is against the law.
The onus lies on the driver not to commit an error while driving. Ignorance of the law does not constitute one to break or bend the law.

Textng is like chatting online. I like to text if I have a question for a friend and just want a quick reply. Nothing I would do to have a major conversation, but its great for a quick conversation.
I don't know why people text when their driving, it just doesn't make sense. One of the weirdest stories I've heard is a kid that got hit with by a train, because he was to busy texting to hear the train horn blowing as he walked on the train tracks.
You shouldn't even use your phone when you are driving. Even talking on the phone while driving is like driving drunk.

Eventually texting goes faster after some practice. It is usually easier to say certain things or do in quiet places because of the fact that you dont have to talk.
But I do agree on the driving thing. Too many people talk on the phone and drive at the same time, and it just adds to the danger when they are texting at the same time, which requires more thought. It should be illegal, I think in my state, Kansas, it is.

Text messaging, or texting is the common term for the sending of "short" (160 characters or less) text messages, using the Short Message Service, from mobile phones. It is available on most digital mobile phones and some personal digital assistants with onboard wireless telecommunications. The individual messages which are sent are called text messages, and more colloquially SMSes, texts, or even txts (in "text speak").
SMS gateways exist to connect mobile SMS services with instant message (IM) services, the world wide web, desktop computers, and even landline telephones (through speech synthesis). Devices which can connect to mobile phones and PDAs through protocols such as Bluetooth can also sometimes use that link to send SMS messages over the wireless network. SMS arose as part of the widely deployed GSM protocol, but is now also available with non-GSM systems.
The most common application of the service is person-to-person messaging, but text messages are also often used to interact with automated systems, such as ordering products and services for mobile phones, or participating in contests. There are some services available on the Internet that allow users to send text messages free of direct charge to the sender, although users of North American networks will often have to pay to receive any SMS text message.-

I text when im places where I cant make a call ie. work, meeting, ect. Its really not that difficult to text especially if you set the predictive text on your phone. And I work on phones all day long the last thing I want to do when I get home is get on the phone again. And so I text. Or email depending on whose where.
