I am called "strange" from time to time. I take it as a compliment and respond with "thank you" and a smile. I am in no way, shape, or form, a "sheep", a trend-follower, or someone who sits back and waits for others to think for me, make up my mind for me, or live my life according to "their" ideals. The fact that someone notices this (and calls me "strange") means I have succeeded in remaining "un-sheep-ified" (a "sheep" is a person who floats through life just doing whatever he or she is told to do without ever questioning the logic or sanity of what they're doing; most humans are "sheep"). "Strange" pushes the envelope, creates improvement, invents new things and ways of accomplishing goals. "Strange" is good.

If someone says that I am strange that means two things.
One, his expectations of my behaviour ( based on his preprogrammed attitude) is not fulfilled.

Second , my behaviour completely overrules anything that he has imagined.

If the outcome is something that does not affect him/her personally , he/she would comment " That is strange" rather than "you are strange". More often than not one tends to take this as a personal reaction.
My response would be just to smile. If I start to explain , at that time, I would be on the defence.

Why bother giving any kind of response.
Every one is strange if you stop to think about it, the difference between someone who tells me I'm strange and me is that I don't go around pointing out peoples "flaws" if that is indeed what they are.

So, yeah, I try very hard to be 'strange'---sure do NOT want to be normal..like everyone else. I don't quote the definition for anyone, but I do tell them thanks, and mean it.

Take it as a compliment. All the best figures in history were strange. Normal people just blend in and get lost in the shuffle.

They do say I am strange. I thank them.

I usually say thank you, for I am told that and called a freak frequently. It just means that I do not conform to the "norm" and I wouldn't want to anyways. I enjoy being able to mane my own decisions, instead of them being made for me.
