What year, and was it stored outside?
A problem I had once was dirty contacts in the start switch. The bike had been stored outdoors and the contacts filmed over. Check for power at the starter solenoid with the button pushed in. If power, the switch is ok. Check the heavy wire from the battery to the solenoid and the one from the soleniod to the starter for clean, tight connections. You should have power on the wire from the battery at all times. If the start switch is good, and you have power in to the solenoid but not out of it the solenoid is bad. It may be possible to short the two large posts with a screwdriver (watch for sparks!). If the starter turns, the solenoid is bad.

It's a beginning.

Was the starter operating before you replaced the battery? First make sure that the battery is correctly connected. If you push the start button do the lights on the dials dim? If they do dim it is an indication that the button is putting the power through to the starter. If they do not dim at all I will have look at the starter button first.

If you have any kind of an alarm system - especially an aftermarket alarm - REMOVE ALL OF IT. It sounds like there is some kind of short circuit cross feed going on related to the door switch and the igniton main power supply. Something is feeding a low voltage into your IGN "ON" circuit. You say "when you get in the car". Does it do it when you are NOT in the car? You may have to leave the drivers' window down and lean in and check the lights. Something to do with the iignitionswitch or wires. Oh - better check the alternator too. Sometimes regulator diodes can fail causing some weird feed-backs

Bad ground will do this or a wire that is comprised. If the wire has just a little contact though broken it will light the lights cuz it is a small load, but when you hit the starter the brake will be full open. Look for loose wires. Try jumping from the battery negative directly to the starter motor case.
