The older I get the more it seems that old people are viewed as an inconvenience at best and a nuisance at worst.

Depends on where you are, in some countries the elderly are well looked after, in others the oldies are viewed as ancients that no longer have any use in society. It is lonely to get old, lonier when no one cares. However, there are so many people with good hearts, the elderly are viewed with the utmost care and understanding. For those who set the elderly aside should realize that one day they too will get old.

I've been aching to answer this question. Story: So I went to the doctor the other day and the nurse opens my folder and says,"Have you signed your DNR for yet?"
I had to think a minute about what it meant.
Do Not Resuscitate
After I got done cussing in
my mind, I said calmly, "Dearie do you think I want some new EMT to have legal
papers to NOT GIVE ME
OXYGEN or any other life
saving support???
Folks, this legal paper gives
any health professional
a reason to withhold any
life saving equipment.
Your life is at the judgment
of whoever is working that
day. So I told this sweet
young thing, I said,"Honey
if there is the slightest breath
left in my body, if there is the
smallest pulse,if I have any
brain function at all, I want
to be resuscitated!" Then I
will decide if I live or die.

Wow, I think we need to change our views of the elderly! They have a lot to offer the rest of society in lessons learned, wisdom and just plain good old storytelling! I think I want to volunteer with the elderly here in Fort Worth-I think I will ask that as a question so I can get some ideas. I love old people, I hope to become one myself one day......God willing I will.

Well, I'm not old yet but I hope I'm half as cool as the elderly people I know. They are patient, respectful and just have that good old fashion kindness. Love hearing all of their stories, they are very wise and you can learn a lot from them. I do have to say that I do get quite concerned with some of them driving.

The attitude I've noticed is, "Get out of the way. You've had your chance. Now it's my turn to do things my way." Gray hair and wrinkles earn you instant disrespect from young co-workers, unless they need you to help them. Our own grown children give us love and honor but they are impatient if we take up too much of their time.
Society's view of the elderly hasn't changed that much during the years I've been on this earth. What's new for me is joining the Senior Citizen age group myself. The view is different from this end of the life cycle.

It seems that most of the young think older people are a burden on society. Spending "their social security" driving to slow, in general just taking up space. They forget World War Two, the cold war, the contributions to science, and medicine. They seem to ignore the sacrifices the older generation made.

I thought for awhile it was getting better......but then now between Bush and others just about claiming the baby boomers all their own will destroy our economy with SS and how anxious they seem for us to hurry up and die....it's gets frustrating. Especially since so many of us have been downsized from jobs and aren't ready to retire or can even afford to and have so many people looking for work....we're just basicly overlooked as if there's no need to bother with the old folks. Old folks has been lowered to anything 45 and over and that's alot of years yet people have to survive. Seems the money went for homes and getting kids sent off and then they pull the rug out from under you when it's finally your turn and they act like you're infringing on them and aren't entitled to anything anymore. Heck....I'm 52....I'm not wanting a career now. I just need a job and there aren't enough Wal-Mart greeter jobs to go around.LOL

I think we're pretty much considered
to be a pain in the behind.
Dump Granny in a nursing home
and haul but.
In Japan, the elderly are revered,
in this country,
we may be just short of "recycled."
In our family,
our elders are respected
or
the kids can move on out.
Respect is a big thing in our home.
To respect your family means,
to respect yourself.

Some seem to view them as outdated, in-the-way people that are a bother.
It's really too bad that some people view them this way because they can be the most understanding and caring people you'll ever meet. Plus they can give you wonderful advice!
